How It Feels To Be a Creative In Uncertain Times

March 26, 2020 by Danyelle Little

What's it like to be a creator in uncertain times? How can you show support to your faves? I'm giving you the real deal here.

It was all good just a month ago.

My digital imprint TheCubicleChick.com was on an upswing in terms of traffic and revenue after being flat for several months, and I had just signed two lucrative contracts with brands, and was working on another one which would bring me a nice payday.

I was also working at a regional supermarket chain on their digital team creating copy and working on their website and mobile properties.

It was the best of times. And then the worst of times happened.

My contractor position at the grocery chain was paused, and one of the contracts that I had worked so hard on was put on hold as well. Covid-19 became a pandemic of epic proportions and we are now experiencing a new normal.

As a creative in uncertain times, this is what it currently feels like:

How to Curate a Holiday Gift Guide for your Blog and Get Paid

October 31, 2019 by Danyelle Little

Are you a content creator or influencer? Learn how to curate a holiday gift guide to help increase your revenue while serving your readers/followers.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas—which also means that if you are a blogger, influencer, or creator, it is time to share seasonal and holiday content for your audience, readers, and followers to consume. I’ve said this before and it bears repeating here—the fourth quarter and the time between Halloween and the New Year is often the most lucrative for folk like us. In order to capitalize on this, it is important to create things that serve your audience’s appetite for The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, while also making some coins.

One way that I do this each year is by creating a Holiday Gift Guide. It is not only a helpful tool for my readers, but allows me the opportunity to collaborate with brands who want to market to my readership and demographic. By publishing a Holiday Gift Guide, I get to curate a snazzy list of gift ideas while sharing new products and services with my core audience who may have not known about said gadget or gizmo, or who may add it to their list because I’ve shared more details with them about the item.

A holiday gift guide is a win/win, but, in order to really make it successful, it should also be profitable for you as well. Here is my list for How to Curate a Holiday Gift Guide for Your Blog and Get Paid:

Start early

The earlier you start sourcing for your holiday gift guide, the better. Brands often get inundated with pitches and emails to review products, so the earlier you start, the more likely you are to get a yes. Right after Labor Day, I sit down and write a list of brands and products that I want to feature in my Gift Guide, and then I begin the process of reaching out. There are times that the brand reached out to me first and I was able to include them in my guide—but more than likely, I was the one who initiated contact.

One way that I set myself up early is to publish a post on The Cubicle Chick about being featured in my holiday gift guide. I usually publish it at the end of September, and use the post in emails to lure brands to work with me. In the post, I share what categories I am looking for (health, beauty, tech, etc.), some of my demographics, and positives about partnering with me.

In the post, I don’t mention a placement fee (I save that for the email), but include a contact form for them to reach out if interested. I also show samples of previous holiday gift guides that I have done.

Show the value

Be ready to share why a brand should work with you and what they would get for placement in your holiday gift guide. What’s your readership? How many followers do you have? What’s your traffic like? Having an updated Media Kit with this information is a way to get them to place something in your holiday gift guide.

I have three types of placements: paid (where I am given a fee in exchange for promotional consideration for being in my holiday gift guide), and free placement (where I am sent the product for free, but not paid), and affiliate placement, which I will cover later in this post. Yes, I do both paid and free placement because sometimes the MSRP or amount of the gift is worth me placing it for free and I often use it, then re-gift it to a family member or friend.

I look at my holiday gift guide like my blog. Too many sponsored posts and it looks too inauthentic, and not enough means I am not leveraging my platform to create an income. I have a almost a 50/50 split for paid versus free placement in my holiday gift guide, and that works for me since I also have other sponsored work.

Fall Business Checklist for Entrepreneurs

September 21, 2018 by Danyelle Little

Autumn is the most lucrative time for many small businesses. Download my free Fall Business Checklist for Entrepreneurs, and rock it out.

Fall is here, which means it is time to pivot and focus on the season in order to maximize sales and make a profit. This is a great time to focus on bundling up your products and services to seize the upcoming holiday sales that will be pouring in.

Are you ready?

I’ve compiled a Fall Business Checklist for Entrepreneurs that fit most business models and niches and can be used to help keep you focused and organized during autumn.

Stock up and bundle

A huge sales season is getting ready to be underway, so if you sell products, it’s time to stock up on them. Economists predict that this holiday shopping season is going to start early, so be prepared and order about 10% more than you did last year.

If you sell products that you make, start working on them now and make sure to also create  few bundles to really drive home a profit.

Create sales campaigns

It’s time to work on your sales campaigns for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Shop Small, and Cyber Monday. Write down your sales goals for each campaign and then begin crafting your strategy, which should include email marketing, social media, and online ads.

I Attended the First Ever Hustle At Sea. Get the Scoop

September 15, 2018 by Danyelle Little

The inaugural Permission to Hustle At Sea retreat took place during five days of work and play while on the Carnival Paradise. Get the scoop here.

I just spent the last week soaking in gems, knowledge, tips, and best practices.

We call it Hustle at Sea—a curated set of workshops and experiences by Audrey McClelland and Vera Sweeney, who are both major players in our industry. What’s more is we are on a Carnival Cruise while partaking in all of this goodness! (Thanks, Carnival!)

When I first heard about this retreat while in an exclusive Facebook Group of powerful and successful bloggers and content creators, I paid it no mind. There are so many conferences and events—I attended many of them and found myself burned out on, or not getting the ROI I expected.

After a few months, the retreat popped up in my feed again, and this time, I did some research. There’s power in learning and growing, even if you’ve been in the game for a minute. What a great way to surround yourself with others who get what you do and can share their tips for success. I decided that after being stagnant and stuck for over the past year, I would register for Hustle at Sea and allow myself to be open, ready to learn, and vulnerable.

The inaugural Permission to Hustle At Sea retreat took place during five days of work and play while on the Carnival Paradise. Get the scoop here.

This last week has been just what I needed. Five days of a retreat style un-conference on the Carnival Paradise ship which docked in both Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Playtime was in the rotation too, as this was a great Work Life Management mix which is key to our overall health and wellness.

It has been a week of bonding and learning and getting back to what it is that I love about the blogging community.

If you don’t do anything else for your career or niche, I implore you to attend an event (or three) that will help you do the same. Start researching conferences, events, retreats, etc. and begin working towards being able to pay for your ticket to attend. Consider it an investment in your future and in your success.

I plan on writing a more extensive wrap up of what I learned at Hustle at Sea, but here are three important gems to remember when working on building and solidifying your brand:
