How to Rock Your Sponsored Content (And Keep Brands Coming Back)

July 20, 2020 by Danyelle Little

Paid campaigns for bloggers, influencers, and content creators are still out there. Learn how to rock your sponsored content to keep brands coming back!

Can you still get booked for sponsored gigs as a blogger or influencer?

YES.

Can you still make a good income with paid content?

YES!

It is harder than it used to be, but I am finding there is still plenty of sponsored campaigns to go around. Most of them are for more short-form content (like Instagram and IG stories). For sponsored blog posts, there are less opportunities, but they are paying more and booking influencers and bloggers for more long-term contracts (6 mos. to a year).

How can you use this to your advantage? One way to land more sponsored and paid work to really rock the sponsored campaigns that you already have.

Most PR companies and brands want to work with content creators whom they’ve already built a relationship with. You can make more money by exceeding the expectations of work you’ve already booked.

I’ve been landing a nice amount of paid work even through the pandemic, and I want to show you how you can, too.

How It Feels To Be a Creative In Uncertain Times

March 26, 2020 by Danyelle Little

What's it like to be a creator in uncertain times? How can you show support to your faves? I'm giving you the real deal here.

It was all good just a month ago.

My digital imprint TheCubicleChick.com was on an upswing in terms of traffic and revenue after being flat for several months, and I had just signed two lucrative contracts with brands, and was working on another one which would bring me a nice payday.

I was also working at a regional supermarket chain on their digital team creating copy and working on their website and mobile properties.

It was the best of times. And then the worst of times happened.

My contractor position at the grocery chain was paused, and one of the contracts that I had worked so hard on was put on hold as well. Covid-19 became a pandemic of epic proportions and we are now experiencing a new normal.

As a creative in uncertain times, this is what it currently feels like:

How to Curate a Holiday Gift Guide for your Blog and Get Paid

October 31, 2019 by Danyelle Little

Are you a content creator or influencer? Learn how to curate a holiday gift guide to help increase your revenue while serving your readers/followers.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas—which also means that if you are a blogger, influencer, or creator, it is time to share seasonal and holiday content for your audience, readers, and followers to consume. I’ve said this before and it bears repeating here—the fourth quarter and the time between Halloween and the New Year is often the most lucrative for folk like us. In order to capitalize on this, it is important to create things that serve your audience’s appetite for The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, while also making some coins.

One way that I do this each year is by creating a Holiday Gift Guide. It is not only a helpful tool for my readers, but allows me the opportunity to collaborate with brands who want to market to my readership and demographic. By publishing a Holiday Gift Guide, I get to curate a snazzy list of gift ideas while sharing new products and services with my core audience who may have not known about said gadget or gizmo, or who may add it to their list because I’ve shared more details with them about the item.

A holiday gift guide is a win/win, but, in order to really make it successful, it should also be profitable for you as well. Here is my list for How to Curate a Holiday Gift Guide for Your Blog and Get Paid:

Start early

The earlier you start sourcing for your holiday gift guide, the better. Brands often get inundated with pitches and emails to review products, so the earlier you start, the more likely you are to get a yes. Right after Labor Day, I sit down and write a list of brands and products that I want to feature in my Gift Guide, and then I begin the process of reaching out. There are times that the brand reached out to me first and I was able to include them in my guide—but more than likely, I was the one who initiated contact.

One way that I set myself up early is to publish a post on The Cubicle Chick about being featured in my holiday gift guide. I usually publish it at the end of September, and use the post in emails to lure brands to work with me. In the post, I share what categories I am looking for (health, beauty, tech, etc.), some of my demographics, and positives about partnering with me.

In the post, I don’t mention a placement fee (I save that for the email), but include a contact form for them to reach out if interested. I also show samples of previous holiday gift guides that I have done.

Show the value

Be ready to share why a brand should work with you and what they would get for placement in your holiday gift guide. What’s your readership? How many followers do you have? What’s your traffic like? Having an updated Media Kit with this information is a way to get them to place something in your holiday gift guide.

I have three types of placements: paid (where I am given a fee in exchange for promotional consideration for being in my holiday gift guide), and free placement (where I am sent the product for free, but not paid), and affiliate placement, which I will cover later in this post. Yes, I do both paid and free placement because sometimes the MSRP or amount of the gift is worth me placing it for free and I often use it, then re-gift it to a family member or friend.

I look at my holiday gift guide like my blog. Too many sponsored posts and it looks too inauthentic, and not enough means I am not leveraging my platform to create an income. I have a almost a 50/50 split for paid versus free placement in my holiday gift guide, and that works for me since I also have other sponsored work.

What I’ve Learned From Blogging For 10 Years

September 14, 2019 by Danyelle Little

Can you believe that I've been blogging for 10 years now, officially? I wax poetic about what I've learned during this journey, and what's next.

I recently celebrated a huge milestone—my blog TheCubicleChick.com turned 10 years old in August. When I started it back in 2009, I had no idea that it would become such a huge part of my life. Blogging has taken me to places I never dreamed in a million years, and has given me the ability to create consistent income to help my family.

You may not know this or not, but being in the blogging game for 10 years is indeed something to behold. Most blogs don’t stand the test of time, as people usually move on to other things. In this space, you see a lot of people come and go, but I am proud to still be standing here after all of these years.

Between me and you, I am looking forward to another 10 more years.

Now that I have this major milestone behind me, I feel it appropriate to share What I’ve Learned From Blogging For 10 Years.

Let’s do this:

Don’t believe the hype

When browsing your Instagram feeds or looking at status updates on Facebook and tweets on Twitter, you may look at the life of a popular influencer as “having it all” and “easy work”. Both are far from the truth. I have come into contact with many bloggers, some who have amassed a hundreds of thousands of followers. A few of these bloggers weren’t able to pay a tip for a meal during a blogging press junket trip. Being a popular blogger doesn’t automatically mean that you are raking in the dough—most of the time, it means the very opposite.

I’ve learned through being in this space for 10 years, the most successful bloggers and influencers have several streams of income that make up their pie. The blog and the social media piece is just one part—other pieces of the pie have to be created in order to make a real living doing what we do.

Many long hours have to be spent in order to make these streams of income—tons of late nights, weekends, and more hours than what a 9 to 5 requires. In the end, the more passive income you make and the more strategic you are, the better the outcomes are.

Not how pretty your aesthetic is on Instagram, or how many followers you have, but the overall quality of problem-solving that you are able to bring to your readership and audience. When they buy into you and invest in what it is that you do, then you are able to tap into residual income as long as you have products and services to fulfill their needs on a consistent basis.
